Hello. This is a brand new Facebook page. And I am a brand new author. What I am typing will surely be changed as I am learning how to navigate WordPress. I will be talking about my book.
My dearest father passed away about 22 years ago. That is when I found in his attic a number of boxes. (I should say “our” attic because that home in Long Branch, New Jersey, is where I was raised and lived for approximately 23 years.) In the first couple of boxes was paraphernalia of a softball league called the Wolverines. They were quite famous on the Jersey Shore. More on them at another time and perhaps even in a prequel to this book. In the next few boxes were what this Facebook page is all about.
Dad grew up on Atkins Avenue in Neptune, New Jersey, a poor section of town. His family and friends lived all around him. The Wolverines were incorporated in the early 1930s, and their meetings were in the basement of his home. Eleven of the members became very, very close friends – some were brothers, many were cousins. When the World War II broke out, each joined his favorite military branch and left the famous beach area for all parts of the world. They kept in touch, though.
The eleven men decided to write to each other using their own style of chain letters. One would write, check off his name, add it to what he had received in his hand, then would send it off to the next soldier, sailor or paratrooper on the list. These letters traveled all over the world. The recipient of the letters was my father, Louis “Put” Attardi, who was exempt from military duty because, he told me, he had to raise my brother Joseph. In my hand, from these boxes, were 45+ letters. I took the letters, placed them in calendrical order, read them, and I had realized I held a history of the Greatest War Ever, in their own words. These were not letters, mind you, to their loved ones at home in the order of “Dear Honey, I miss you so.” No, they were in the words of “Dear Ubbas, Please Pass This Nonsense Along,” and that they did. And now I am showing them to you. Because of the dates, and because of what they were allowed to write about, due to censorship, I was able to extrapolate, and by other means, tell you about the battles in which they were involved. Even their families will be surprised to learn their whereabouts and their heroic activities, their endeavors while they attempted to keep our country free.
Please read my book to learn about these brave Neptune Wolverines and how they managed to keep in touch with each other, what their fighting catalyst was, and how told you about World War II.
